Start with the label
A “Money Market 4.9%” phrase can describe several different things: a deposit account, a money market mutual fund, a brokerage sweep, or a comparison article. Each label changes the questions you should ask.
Questions that matter
- Is the percentage APY, yield, estimated return, or promotional language?
- Who is the actual provider?
- Is the rate variable and subject to change?
- Are there minimum deposits, balance tiers, monthly fees, or withdrawal limits?
- What insurance or protection applies, if any?
What 4.9% does not mean by itself
It does not automatically mean guaranteed earnings, universal eligibility, a fixed future rate, or a safe choice for every person. The number is only useful after the surrounding terms are checked.
